Last year the Michigan House of Representatives passed House Bill (HB-4493), which mandated Genocide education in public schools, including for the first time, the Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian Genocide. A tremendous victory for social justice that was possible thanks to the hard work of the ANCA and the Armenian-American community of Michigan.
However, that victory wasn’t without its battles. Specifically a campaign of Genocide Denial led by the Turkish American Cultural Association of Michigan (TACAM), and its former Board Member Mehmet Erdem Yaya, the Associate Professor of Economics at Eastern Michigan University.
In solidarity with other victims of Genocide, the American Hellenic Council joins with the Armenian-American community of Michigan in its call for the immediate dismissal of Professor Erdem Yaya from Eastern Michigan University. The presence of Genocide deniers within a higher place of learning in the United States is unacceptable. His continued employment is a direct assault on the University’s academic integrity and an insult to all victims of Genocide.
